What Is a Belt Weigh Feeder?

A belt weigh feeder is a continuous feeding and weighing machine designed to control the flow rate of bulk and granular materials while measuring the amount of material being delivered. Unlike a conventional belt conveyor, a belt weigh feeder combines material conveying, weighing, and feeding control in one system.

A belt weigh feeder is commonly used when a production process requires a stable and accurately controlled material flow. Typical materials include limestone, coal, clinker, cement, ore, fertilizer, chemical materials, grain, coke, and other bulk solids.

How Does a Belt Weigh Feeder Work?

The working principle of a belt weigh feeder is relatively straightforward. Material enters the feeder through an inlet hopper and falls onto the moving belt. The belt continuously transports the material toward the discharge point.

During operation, a weighing system measures the material load on the belt, while a speed sensor monitors belt speed. The control system combines the material load and belt speed to calculate the instantaneous feeding rate.

When the actual feeding rate differs from the preset value, the control system automatically adjusts the belt speed through a variable-frequency drive or other speed-control equipment. This allows the belt weigh feeder to maintain the required material flow.

The continuous measurement and automatic speed adjustment make a belt weigh feeder suitable for applications where stable feeding is important.

Main Components of a Belt Weigh Feeder

A typical belt weigh feeder consists of several important components. The belt is responsible for transporting material through the weighing section. The weighing frame supports the weighing structure and transfers the material load to the load cells.

Load cells detect the weight of material on the belt, while a speed sensor measures belt velocity. A drive motor and reducer provide the required belt movement. The control cabinet receives signals from the weighing and speed-measuring devices and calculates the feeding rate.

Depending on the production line, the belt weigh feeder can also be connected to PLC, DCS, or other automatic control systems.
